COASST

Welcome to COASST!

After you’ve attended a training with COASST, there are just a few more steps to get you signed up and ready for surveys.

Here are all of the steps you’ll need to take, complete with the form and links you will need to get started:

  1. Fill out a Form: coasst.org/ProfileForm
    • We use the information collected in this form to reach out to you with updates, and send along resupply materials for your survey kit.
    • We will never share your personal information with ANYONE without your permission.
    • The contract lets us know that you intend to survey for COASST.
    • If you aren’t sure of your exact start date, make an estimate.
  2. Pay a deposit (refundable upon withdrawal): coasst.org/kit-deposits
    • Brand new COASSTers will pay the COASST BB or MD deposit for the full survey kit.
    • If you have attended a COASSTLite! virtual training previously and have already received part of your survey kit, you will not need to pay the full deposit amount. Simply select the COASSTLite! Level 2 deposit instead.
    • You do not need to pay a deposit for a camera unless you aren’t able to use your own camera or smart phone to take pictures. Most COASSTers choose to use their phone!
    • If you simply can’t afford this deposit amount at this time, let us know by selecting ‘deposit scholarship’ on your Contract form. Don’t give it another thought – we will take care of it!
  3. Attend office hours with our Participant Coordinator to get set up with your new beach assignment.
    • You’ll receive an email from coasst@uw.edu next week to confirm your time slot if you haven’t already.
    • You’re welcome to email us at coasst@uw.edu or call 206-221-6893 to confirm if you aren’t sure!
  4. Conduct a reconnaissance mission on your new beach to make sure everything is ready. Complete your Paces Per Meter form while you are out there, and let us know your PPM by emailing us at coasst@uw.edu
  5. Grab your kit and your survey partner, and get out on a beach survey!

Having trouble? Send an email to coasst@uw.edu or call 206-221-6893. We are happy to help!

You can find copies of your data sheets and short video clips about survey protocols on the Beached Birds Toolbox and the Marine Debris Toolbox page of our website.
